PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Police took a motorcycle rider into custody Thursday morning near the Oregon Zoo following a lengthy chase that police said began near Hood River and eventually wound its way through Portland.

A Portland Police officer on a motorcycle caught up with the rider on Highway 26 near the Oregon Zoo and pulled him over without incident. He was identified as Nikolay Mitkov, 20, of Portland.

The chase initially began at about 9 a.m. on westbound Interstate 84 near Hood River when Mitkov attempted to elude pursuing Hood River city police officers at speeds near 135mph, according to Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.

Hood River police broke off the pursuit at the Hood River County line, Hastings said.

OSP picked up the pursuit near Corbett a short time later and followed Mitkov to an area near Troutdale where they lost sight of him due to traffic and speed, Hastings said.

Portland Police then spotted Mitkov on Highway 26 and the pursuit ended near the Oregon Zoo. Police said speeds reached 90mph at points during the chase. The speed limit on that part of Highway 26 is 50mph.

Mitkov was on a 2003 Yamaha R6 600cc high-performance motorcycle, police said. He faces felony attempt to elude and reckless driving. He will also be cited for driving while suspended.
