Thierry Henry refused to give Nick Pope credit for his point-blank save from Bradley Barcola during Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw against PSG.

For large parts of the game, especially in the second half, Newcastle United were under the cosh, with the home side missing several chances.

Just after the hour mark, Kylian Mbappe did very well to skip by his man on the wing, he ran into the box, and cut the ball back for youngster Bradley Barcola who was five yards out, but he was denied by Nick Pope.

Micah Richards thought it was a ‘great save’, even Ally McCoist on commentary was going mad about it and how the England star managed to get down to block it.

But one man who wasn’t pleased was Thierry Henry because he didn’t think it was a great stop, instead, he felt it was a ‘bad finish’, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (28/11/23 at 10:20 pm).

Just like against AC Milan during the opening night of the Champions League, Newcastle’s man between the sticks was in fine form again and played a key role in his team not losing.

But, at the end of the day, you can only please some, with Thierry Henry reacting to the numerous chances that were being created by the home side.

Nick Pope against PSG

“They saved what they could have saved,” said Henry. “In all fairness, they had some opportunities to win the game way before that.

“Like I said, if you don’t put the ball in the back of the net, then the other team believe they can win it.

“PSG just couldn’t put their chances away, especially in the second half. Barcola had three or four chances. Kylian could have scored. He tried everything. Headers. Dembele had some also.

On Pope’s point-blank save in the 66th minute: “Barcola couldn’t finish the amazing work of Mbappe right there.

Micah Richards interrupted and said ‘great save, no?!’ to which Thierry Henry responded: ’No, I think it’s a bad finish. You have all the goal open on the other side. It happens. It happened to be also, but it’s a bad finish.”

VAR strikes again

Newcastle should be heading back to England with three points in the bag and destiny in their own hands.

But that’s not the case after a controversial and pretty wrong VAR penalty call in stoppage-time – Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher reacted to it all.

Now it’s a case of licking the wounds, getting back to Premier League action and trying to build on the impressive win over Chelsea from the weekend.

A number of players, amid injuries, are impressing, no more so than youngster Lewis Miley.
